Skincare is King

Jan 21, 2013

Your skin reflects your health. The truth is, you can make a substantial investment in pricey foundations, concealers, mascaras, eye shadows and lipstick, but nothing can hide bad skin.
The good news is skin care can be simple. Caring for facial skin doesn’t need to be a 10-step process, and you don't have to spend a ton of money on dozens of products. Essentially, skin care involves 4 basic steps:
A healthy skin regimen must include exfoliation. The skin is constantly shedding cells; if those cells are not removed they can build up a layer that will not allow treatment products to penetrate. They can also lead to blemishes as the skin cannot expel toxins through the blocked dermal layer. Removing the dead cells allows products to nourish the live cells. The shedding process unclogs pores, keeps skin clean and allows it to breathe.
The idea is to not scrub your way to China, but in a warm shower or once the skin is wet, gently buff to remove the debris. You should exfoliate twice a week, though if skin shows irritation don’t scrub so hard or switch to a milder defoliant.
With regular exfoliation, the next step is cleaning and moisturizing your skin daily. Wash once in the morning and once at night. Cleansing the skin is followed with a toner and moisturizer. Toners act as a post cleanse, helping remove oil, dirt, and make-up you may have missed when cleansing. Depending on what product you're actually using, different toners can work as moisturizers, astringents or fresheners. To get the results you want from a toner, you've got to read the ingredients and know how to use it properly. Oils and extracts help soothe your skin, alcohol-based toners tighten the skin and pores, and fresheners tighten the skin like astringents, but they are made of ingredients like caffeine and green tea instead of alcohol.
Moisturizing is a key component of healthy skin; it is most effective when applied at night after cleansing, when skin renewal is most active, and again in the morning, within a few minutes of showering when the pores are open. Moisturizers prevent and treat dry skin, protect sensitive skin, improve skin tone and texture, and mask imperfections. They work to hold water in the outermost layer of skin and act as a temporary barrier. Many moisturizers contain some combination of humectants and emollients, along with other ingredients. It is best to use a moisturizer suited for your skin type (dry, normal, or oily). For dry skin, I recommend the Green Science line from Aveda for its nourishing and protective properties.
Lastly, there’s skin protection. We generally think of skin protection in terms of sunscreens against damaging UV rays, but skin protection begins with a balanced diet full of nutritious foods, anti-oxidants and regular hydration. Regular exercise is also important to ensure circulation and nourish cells to keep your skin healthy and vibrant.
With all the products on the market, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Rather than trying to sort it all out and making an unnecessary investment, I recommend consulting with a knowledgeable skin care expert and letting them assist you in developing a regimen care that will help prevent future problems and solve current skin care issues. Face Value is dedicated to providing cutting edge, reasonably priced products that will address any and all issues you might have with your skin, whether you are young or old. Come see us, we promise to take good care of you and your skin.
